An Iranian-American trans man travels back in time to an LGBTQ+ archive to understand his sexuality. During an erotic journey of self-discovery, he encounters his past and present self. This is a documentary about gay female-to-male and female-to-masculine transgender people. It deals mostly with life after transition, with little emphasis on the transition process itself. It also deals with people whose physical orientation is more masculine. There are two main categories of subjects. One is Lou Sullivan, a female-to-male trans activist who also pioneered gay identification. He is represented by several excerpts from the interviews he has given on television, as well as the writings of one of his correspondents. The other is a series of interviews with various trans people of different appearance and anatomy – one subject identified as masculine insisted on keeping his vagina. They often have trouble finding intimate partners, although Trans Night in gay bathhouses is a great help as they don’t have to explain themselves. This is wrapped up in a narrative drama. A masculine trans Iranian (who left Iran shortly after the revolution) goes to a queer archive in Chicago for research and befriends a younger, boyish trans staff member. The Iranian aspect is further enhanced by discussions of an Iranian “omelet” dish. This hybrid approach makes the film more interesting and makes it feel more than the dryness of a simple documentary. I saw it as part of a film festival where the cast and director were present. The director mentioned that the Iranian actor had helped with a short “proof of concept” to raise funds and that he was kept on, with Iranian accents added to the script. The other actor was an activist himself and his role was written with him in mind.
